These Crime Classics VANISHING From Streaming (And What’s Worth Owning)

Your favorite crime movie was on streaming last month. Tonight it’s gone, and the “buy” button doesn’t actually make it yours either. Here’s what’s worth owning before it disappears.

This is a buying guide, plain and simple. Streaming is not a library you own, it is a library you rent, and it quietly gets smaller every month because every film a service keeps costs it a licensing fee, and the fastest way to stop paying that fee is to make the movie vanish. Even “buying” a digital copy only gets you a revocable license. There is an active class-action lawsuit over exactly that, and a California law in effect since the start of 2025 that forces stores to disclose you are only renting a license, not owning the film.

So we sort the crime canon into three piles. OWN ON DISC (the disc is genuinely the best version and can never be taken away): Scarface in 4K (the best it has ever looked, per the reviewers who compare these discs), Carlito’s Way (the Arrow Video edition over the studio disc), Once Upon a Time in America (the region-free 4K with both cuts, mind the edition traps), and The Departed (a true 4K remaster done with the film’s own editor). STREAM WHILE YOU CAN (great now, but on a rotating license): Casino, Goodfellas, and Heat. DO NOT RE-BUY (a worse picture sold to you again at a premium): the Goodfellas 4K that reviewers nicknamed “Brownfellas,” and the Godfather 50th-anniversary 4K (buyer-beware on the grain and what’s in the box).
