Goodfellas and The Sopranos show how the Mafia bleeds a business dry. A real $745,000 bust-out reveals who takes the money—and who gets stuck with the bills.

In Goodfellas, Paulie gets inside a business and turns its credit into cash. In The Sopranos, Davey Scatino’s gambling debt gives Tony a way into his sporting-goods store. The owner is still there. The deliveries keep arriving. But the business is being emptied, one order at a time.

Murray Packing gives that screen story a documented comparison. A costly loan helped put Joseph Pagano in control, purchases surged, and merchandise went to Peter Castellana’s Pride Wholesale at below-cost prices. Across ten days in March 1961, Pagano withdrew $745,000 through two banks. By bankruptcy, roughly $1.3 million was owed to 85 creditors.

The Justice Department’s 1973 case study, Anatomy of a Scam, follows the testimony and transactions behind the collapse. Put beside Goodfellas and The Sopranos, it shows how debt, purchasing power and control of a checkbook become a bust-out. Murray Packing is a separate case, not the source story for Goodfellas; its lack of a fire does not disprove Henry Hill’s account of the Bamboo Lounge.
