How You Become a Made Man—Through Mafia Movies.

Goodfellas leaves the Mafia oath behind a closed door. An FBI tape captured the blood, the burning saint card and the promise that made a man a member.

Tommy DeVito thinks he is about to become a made man. Goodfellas shows how much that status matters, then shuts the audience out of the ceremony itself. On October 29, 1989, a hidden FBI microphone in Medford, Massachusetts, recorded an actual Patriarca family induction. The ritual the film withholds was now evidence in the participants’ own voices.

Joe Valachi had described a Mafia initiation to the Senate in 1963. The Medford recording lets us compare that account with the oath being administered inside a real crime family. Alongside it, Donnie Brasco draws the distinction between a “friend of mine” and a “friend of ours”—the boundary between an associate and a made member. The Godfather offers a different kind of ceremony: Michael Corleone’s baptism scene is a Catholic sacrament, not a Mafia induction.
